UNIT FIVE INTRODUCTION
The Unit 5 Handout introduces the student to a very important translation issue in Genesis 2:18.
In the King James Version, two separate Hebrew words are translated “help” and “meet.” The
verse then reads: “And the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will
make him a help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18, KJV). Since this wording has an “old English”
sound, the New King James Version translated the two words, “helper comparable to him.”
However, in modern English the word “helper” carries the idea of an assistant who is less
skilled.
What God Has Joined Together elaborates on the original meaning of God’s creation of the
woman as a “help” who would “meet” face to face with Adam in order for the two of them to live
together in a dynamic relationship of help for one another in the same manner that God is the
help for His people. Men Are Like Waffles; Women Are Like Spaghetti compares the mutual
need for help to the ideas of syrup on waffles and sauce on spaghetti. The Family emphasizes the
importance of making sure that reality is a vital part of “mate selection” as romance, and vice
versa.
