Part 1
Find one word (or a 2-3 word concept) that grabs your attention in the section Autumn or Winter.
Use the word from the novel in a sentence and cite it within a complete sentence of your own. Example: One of the first concepts to resonate with me in the section Autumn of The Bluest Eye is “make do” (34). Format: The 34 in parenthesis cites the page number. I need not include the section Autumn in the citation because I’ve included it in the sentence. Using the concept “make do” in my own sentence fulfills the convention of putting quotes in a context. Cite the page and section number of your quoted word/concept.
Discuss why the word is meaningful to the story, the section, and the passage. In addition, explain how the word is important to you personally.
Part 2
Now that you’ve come up with a word or concept and explored how the word is meaningful to you, formulate one connected topic and theme inspired by the word as you might do in writing about the story. A theme is a general insight on human behavior, the human situation, or the human condition.
Examples: Topic: The symbolic significance of make do. Theme: “Making do” acts as an instrument of deprivation.
While you are NOT required, for this assignment, to come up with a central idea based on this topic and theme, an example of such a central idea follows:

Central idea: The “make do” storefront the Breedloves live in described on page 34 plays a key role in the Breedlove family as an instrument of deprivation.

In the section autumn, the narrator says, “la de da” (34).
(34). If we are quoting from one book and name the author in our introduction paragraph, we need not cite the author again. If we name the section name or chapter number in the same sentence as the quoted passage, we need not include the chapter number or section name in the parenthetical citation.
We include the author’s name in the citation if we haven’t mentioned it yet or if we are quoting in our essay from more than one text.
