movie is Malcolm X. movie is Malcolm X. Papers: Students will chose to read one of the reading assignments from under the tab labeled “Assignments” in Blackboard. Students will then chose one of the essay topics to address in a well organized three to five page thematic essay. Be sure to use specific evidence from the assigned text to support your argument. Papers will be 3 – 5 pages, double spaced using standard margins and either 10 or 12 point font. Students must address one of the assigned essay topics. Students may not use non-academic or non-scholarly sources (e.g. Sparksnotes, Wikipedia) and should rely solely on the assigned reading material. These are thematic response papers, not research papers.

Grades for the papers will be based on the following criteria:

Writing assignments will be graded based on the following criteria:
Style (e.g. grammar) = 10%
Use of assigned material to address the topic = 30%
Logic and Coherence = 60%

Papers must meet Chicago Manual of Style style guidelines, including proper use of citations.

Students will be required to submit papers to “Smart Thinking,” the free online tutoring service offered by Hill College, and submit copies of the comments page from “Smart Thinking” with the final draft of their papers. http://hillcollege.edu/smarthinking/ Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to revise your paper after receiving comments from Smart Thinking. Smart Thinking endeavors to get papers back to students as quickly as possible, but sometimes it can take up to three business days for them to get papers back to students – even longer towards the end of a semester. Provide a copy of the Smart Thinking tutors comments with the hardcopy of your paper in class on the day that the assignment is due. Failure to submit papers to Smart Thinking will result in an automatic ten point deduction from the paper’s grade.
