Listening Guide

Play the first movement of Mozart’s Serenade No.
13 in G Major, K. 525, Eine kleine Nachtmusik,
available on NAXOS*. You will be looking to
identify the times and duration of the exposition
(including the first and second themes),
development, and the recapitulation. Then, follow
these directions to create your own listening guide
for sonata form:
• Watch the counter and pause when you hear the
exposition and first theme.
• Click the “pause” button when you hear the end
of the first theme, and write down the counter
time.
• Click the “play” button again and listen for the
beginning of the second theme. Write down
the counter time.
• Click the “pause” button when you hear the end
of the second theme, and write down the
counter time.
• Click the “play” button again. Click “pause” and
write down the time when you hear the end of
the exposition.
• Click the “play” button again. Click “pause” and
write down the start and stop times of the
development.
• Click the “play” button again and listen for the first
theme as it appears in the recapitulation. Write
down the counter time. Here is a brief
example:
• List start times: :00 –
• List stop times: :00 – :14
• Identify the musical idea (exposition, first theme,
second theme, development, recapitulation)
:00 – :14, idea Submit your list of beginning
and ending counter times for each musical
idea as it occurs, identifying the titles
associated with those times. Also, explain how
the composer uses dynamics and timbre to
achieve variety in the examples that you
created. This entry is worth 20 points. Please
