This paper, which will focus on the building blocks of literary analysis and college level research, consists of three parts.

In the first part (about 1 page), you should explain how the genre (short story) in which the work is written shapes both what it can and can’t do and the ways it can do it.

In the second section (2-3 pp) you will make specific, interesting, claims about 3-4 specific literary elements (such as rhythm, symbols and language, setting, themes, plot, point of view, characters and characterization).

The final section (2-3 pp) will be summaries and responses to 3 pieces of secondary criticism about the work. The point of this section is to both give the reader an idea of the types of interpretation about the literary work and for you to enter the critical conversation.
