Lenses can not only be fun to use, but they can also give us the chance to narrow and frame our ideas so we’re not overwhelmed by all those scenes, dialogues, and exposition that make up a novel. For example, if we want to apply the Gender lens, we would then focus on how gender roles operate in the story. If we want to apply the Marxist lens, we would then focus on the role economics plays in the novel.

Explore one or more of the following lenses: Feminist/Gender, Economic Determinist /Marxist, Deconstructionist, Archetypal, Psychological/Psychoanalytic, Topical/Historical, Moral/Intellectual, Structuralist.
Speculate on how you might use the lens in interpreting something specific about the novel SO FAR through an element (character, setting, plot, theme, etc.).
Explain why you chose this particular lens and what you learned about the lens, the novel, and yourself as a writer and thinker from applying it.
Even though you haven’t completed the novel, you should speculate Based on the definition and examples, you should have an idea on how you might use the lens. You might begin with something such as

If I were to apply the deconstructionist lens, I would probably look at the ambiguity of Marla’s presence in the narrator’s life. It seems they the borders that make up their attraction-repulsion relationship keeps blurring, so neither can really stay settled in either for any length of time. I’d like to explore that ambiguity. I’d probably start by finding all the scenes in which both attraction and repulsion occur in the same scene or sequence of scenes. This blurring or flipping of emotions occurs throughout the first half of the book, especially in Chapters……
