Environmental Threat Symposium Presentation.

Environmental Threat Symposium Presentation.. Environmental Threat Symposium Presentation.. As written in the instructions: "For the final laboratory periods of the semester we will have an ‘environmental issue symposium’ where you will present a 10-15 minute presentation, using PowerPoint slides to educate the class about the scientific explanations, remedies, and pitfalls associated with your issue. Because we all have broad and diverse interests, there is great flexibility in the topics you can choose; however, I do require that you research your topic well by considering peer-reviewed primary literature that you will in turn incorporate into your presentation"

So, write a 10-12 min presentation on an environmental issue that negatively affects the environment and ecosystems. Be sure to to look over the grading scale attached and to explain what’s going on, before outlining the damages to the ecosystems, the major factors contributing for damages (all explained), potential solutions, and potential problems with the solutions. Be sure to look at everything that’s attached as it includes other presentation made before to get an idea of what’s required (Don’t copy). It is best to include an animal that’s negatively affected from the issue!

The topic could be:
1)"The environmental effects of dams on the Nile River"..you can start with the geography and countries with the Nile running in them, what a dam is and the different dams on the river…etc as introduction, then explain the different issues following the format in the instructions above.. It is best to Include how a certain type of fish or any living organism is affected by the dam. (I think this will be the most interesting!)

2)"The Amazon River deforestation effects on (name animal)"
The same applies here, and it also doesn’t have to be on the river amazon, as long as it’s deforestation (One of the presentations attached is similar to this, change the animal if you decide to do this.)

3- a topic of your choice.

Once you decide on the topic, send me a message! Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

potentially hazardous waste water

potentially hazardous waste water. potentially hazardous waste water. The purpose of this activity is to become aware of the potentially hazardous waste water that is being dumped into the water systems that surround NYC. Working in groups of two, you will use Microsoft Excel to analyze water quality data for NYC. You will submit two separate files in a PDF format to this website under RiverKeeper Project. The two files wil be two graphs created in Excel. You should create two scatter plot graphs to examine possible correlation.

Your data will be "collected" online from the Riverkeeper website under Water Quality/Hudson River data.

1) Go to http://www.riverkeeper.org. Click on Water Quality at the top of the page, and select Hudson River Data.

2) On the right hand side of the page, click on New York City, Hudson County & Bergen County Sites. A list of sampling sites will appear under the link. Preview all water sampling sites to see which sites are near your community or sites that you just may be interested in. Click on the site that you would like to analyze.

3) First, copy and paste the data from the Entero/Rainfall Table tab and, second on a new spreadsheet, copy and paste the data from the Physical/Chemical Data tab into Excel. Your data should include at least 15 sample dates. Be sure to note the date range that you choose because it will not be on your X or Y axis, but you’ll still need to state the date range.

4) You will use these data to create two tables AND two graphs that will be a visual representation of the numbers.

Your first graph should be a scatter graph (scatter with only markers) that shows the relationship between Enterococcus count and four days total rainfall. Remember to use the control key or Command key to copy the correct column. Make sure your graph includes a linear trend line.
i NOTE: before creating your graph, replace any Enterococcus values in your table that are “<10” with “10”.
Your second graph should be a scatter graph (scatter with only markers) that shows a relationship between temperature and dissolved oxygen of the river for the same date range that you chose for bacteria and total rainfall. Click on the Physical/Chemical Data tab to access these data. Make sure your graph includes a linear trend line.
For both graphs, your X and Y axes must be clearly labeled, and your graphs should have a proper title.
For both tables, include average, minimum, and maximum values. For the Enterococcus vs. Rainfall table, color code the enterococcus data green or red to indicate acceptable conditions (green) or beach advisory (red).

Think about the correct information for labeling you graph. When you "click" on your graph choose Chart Design/ Add Chart Elements to add labels to the X and Y axis, plus your title.
Legend: On the right-hand side there is a legend, which at this point is called “Series,” this label needs to be renamed. This label is your legend and pertains to your data. “Click” on the “series” and then “right click” to “Select Data” to get the “Select Data Source” window and look for “Name” and name your legend accordingly. If you want to make the font larger, right-click, choose Format Legend/Font and choose a larger font size.
Chart Title: Your chart title may read the same as your legend, but you need to re-name it to show where your data collection originated. Click on the chart title and type the title accordingly.
X and Y Axes labels: Go to “Chart Layout” and choose “Axis Titles” and choose Horizontal Axis and then Vertical Axis. Name accordingly. Enlarge the Font.
REPEAT FOR THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL DATA.
Place the graphs one on top of the other or side-by-side; make sure your X and Y-axis are labeled and you have a title to the chart.

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE SAPTIAL DISTRIBUTION OF SPANISH MOSS

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE SAPTIAL DISTRIBUTION OF SPANISH MOSS. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE SAPTIAL DISTRIBUTION OF SPANISH MOSS. We want to determine the combination of factors that is most predictive of where Spanish moss is found in a pine stand. In particular, we want to examine how distance to the edge of the stand and local species composition may influence the occurrence of Spanish moss. You should start your introduction in the broad context of factors that influence the spatial distribution of an epiphyte, before introducing the relevant literature on Spanish moss. Be sure to include sources that have discussed factors influencing the local distribution of Spanish moss in a forest, including host tree characteristics. In the last paragraph, broadly outline what we examined the present study and why it is important. Beware that there are many assertions about Spanish moss in the literature (and in the literature) that are mainly observational, with little data to support them. For example, several people have stated that Spanish moss performs well on dead trees, yet there is no actual data to support their assertion. It’s OK to credit somebody for an observation they have published in the literature, just beware that such statements have not necessarily been supported with data.

Be very careful about blindly citing other works that were cited in another paper. Be sure to read over any work that you are citing.

DO NOT use papers on specific topics to cite general facts. For example, if you want to cite something very general about epiphytes, cite general books on epiphyte biology or, perhaps, review papers.

DO NOT use quotes. This is not an English class; word for word quotes are rarely ever used in scientific papers.

However….DO NOT copy sentences word for word from the literature (either), even if you cite the paper. Stringing together sentences from different papers is considered plagiarism. It’s best to read the literature, digest it, and write it in your own words. Include all relevant sections (title page, Abstract, Key Words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, References, tables, figure legends, and figures).

You do not need a Cover Letter, nor do you need to suggest reviewers.
Provide your tables starting on the first page after the references; start each new table on a new page.

Note that figure legends are typically provided on a separate sheet, before the figures themselves. Put each new figure on a new page (after the tables).
