rhetorical appeals

rhetorical appeals. rhetorical appeals. Length: 5-7 pages (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font)

For this assignment, you will compose a nonfiction essay that incorporates some of the writing strategies discussed in class. You may choose from one of these three options:

Option 1—Write a personal essay in which you reflect on an experience from your own past. Pay particular attention to the distinction between the “I” who experienced things in the past and the “I” who is reflecting in the present. Your goal is to convince your readers to believe something that would be significant to their own lives. In other words, you should write about your experience with the aim of extracting some meaning you could share with others.
Option 2—Write about a new experience in which you have immersed yourself. This experience should be something that you have never done before. Perhaps it is eating sushi, or going to a hockey game, or playing Dungeons & Dragons, or attending a knitting circle. The one requirement is that it must be an activity/experience in which you engage with other people. It cannot be a solo activity. In your essay, review the experience. Your essay should present an argument about your experience to your readers.
Option 3—Write an essay in which you argue for or against an issue you are particularly interested in. (The issue should not be a hot-button issue). Compose an essay that presents your argument and support for your point.
No matter which option you choose, your essay is fundamentally attempting to make a claim or thesis. It is trying to convince your readers to believe what you want them to believe. As you do so, I would like to see you use some of the strategies discussed in relation to the model essays covered in class. In addition:

Please pay attention to rhetorical appeals (as discussed in class)
Please give though to crafting an introduction and conclusion that use some of the strategies discussed in class
Please include a unique title for your essay
Please include at least two quotations from outside sources (and cite those sources)
Please consider the audience for your writing to be other college students

WESTERN MYTHS AND MYTHOLOGIES – ESSAY 2: THE MYTHIC HERO THEN AND AGAIN

WESTERN MYTHS AND MYTHOLOGIES – ESSAY 2: THE MYTHIC HERO THEN AND AGAIN. WESTERN MYTHS AND MYTHOLOGIES – ESSAY 2: THE MYTHIC HERO THEN AND AGAIN. Choose two retellings of the myths of Perseus and Theseus by Hamilton and their corresponding cinematic adaptations, and analyze how similarities or differences in plot, characterization, or treatment of themes reshape our understanding of the myths in particular and mythology in general.

In other words, DO NOT merely list the differences between the two works, but detail how your comparison illuminates the significance of mythic themes, the mythic hero, and mythology.

Begin your essay with an introduction that includes a brief description of the main ideas developed in the myths. Follow with a brief summary or synopsis of the stories. Then, provide a thesis statement that synthesizes your observations.

DO NOT WRITE “There are differences and similarities between the two texts/heroes”

You need to be specific, for example: “Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House (1879) and James Joyce’s “Eveline” (1914) raise similar questions about the conformist role women are expected to play in the modern world. Both Ibsen’s Nora and Joyce’s Evelin are intelligent and self-aware of their oppression, but whereas Nora is able to break free from society’s hold, Eveline cannot.”

In this particular example, the two works being compared are underlined, the frame of the comparison addressing the main theme of the stories is in italics (the conformist role of women), and the thesis is in bold. Organize the body of your essay with a combination of blocks (chunks) and sequence (alternating). In chunking, each object of the comparison is presented separately; in a sequenced comparison, you proceed point by point.

Each step of your exposition needs to be adequately supported by specific details from the text and/or film (i.e. quotes and scenes). Your essay should be 1000-1250 words long, contain a heading, have an original title, follow MLA Format, include a Works Cited list, and abide to Formal Language Guidelines.

Book/movie review

Book/movie review. Book/movie review. Find a poem, story, play, or literary selection that you either really like or dislike FROM ONE OF YOUR BOOKS, Volumes A, B, or C. Then, imitate the poet’s style and use similar elements, such as symbolism, imagery, rhythm, stanza form, and/or line structure (how the sentences fit into lines and stanzas). You may update the subject and use appropriate modern English. There are three parts to this assignment.

A. Introduce your selection from one the required books and tell me why the selection was a source of inspiration for your original creative work. Tell me what elements were found in the selection and what you intend to use in your creation.

B. THEN, create your own literary piece based on specific elements found in the literary work.

C. FINALLY, interpret your creation for your audience so that the “true meaning” will not be lost on future generations after you become famous or infamous as the case may be.

NOTE: You may update the language to modernize your creation, create your unique rhyme (or lack thereof), and even change the perspective. A good example is Sir Phillip Sidney who was inspired to write Astrophil and Stella after following in love with a married woman. He based his poem on the Italian sonnet and Petrarchan theme which was popular during the middle ages, conceits, and oxymoron. So, you might use the Italian sonnet form to write from a 21st century viewpoint of unrequited love
