Tips for writing Comparative Papers

1- Compare and contrast different writers’ perspectives. Are there similar themes or issues being addressed? What are the similarities or differences in the way each writer approaches those issues. What are the similarities or differences (depending on which one you are focusing on) in their critical approaches?
2- Consider the arguments, premises and evidence presented in each text.
3- Identify each author’s main line of argument or thesis statement.
4- Your own thesis statement should contain a claim that unites a discussion of the texts you are analyzing.
5- Your thesis statement should include the argument that will be advanced in support of the claim that you are making.
6- Organization is key to any paper, thus developing an outline and providing it in the introduction will help you organize your thoughts as well as your readers’.

Tips for Writing Essays in General
1- Know the difference between a thesis, an argument, and the premises of an argument. A thesis is a claim that you wish to defend. An argument is what you say in order to defend the thesis, it provides reasons in support of your thesis. Premises are assumptions that are used to make your argument.
2- State your thesis (the claim that you are going to defend throughout the paper) clearly at the beginning of the paper.
3- Provide an outline of your arguments in your introduction.
4- How many arguments you provide will depend on the space you have for your paper.
5- To critically evaluate arguments made by authors, and to defend adequately your own arguments, you need to a) determine whether the premises of an argument are true, and b) whether the argument follows logically from the premises.
6- When writing, you always need to seriously consider counter-arguments to your thesis and premises. And then you need to address these. This is what makes the difference between an ok paper and a good paper. This doesn’t mean you should come up with a weak thesis which everyone agrees with, there is no need to write a paper about it then.
7- Use your limited space wisely. Don’t waste words. Don’t say anything that is not necessary to clarify or defend your thesis. With each paragraph and with each sentence, ask yourself: Why am I telling my reader this? Is it significant to defend my thesis? If not, erase it.
8- Use simple grammatical structures and importantly concepts and words you understand and can define.
