Midterm Reflection – Discussion post

I’m studying and need help with a Statistics question to help me learn.

Now that we have passed the half-way mark of the class, tell us in at least 250 words what you think about learning math online?

Name at least one thing that you really enjoy about the class (come on, there must be something!) and at least one improvement that could make this class even better. Feel free to editorialize!

Also, this is a good time to make a “keep-quit-start” resolution.

  • What are you doing to help yourself learn in this class that you are going to keep doing because it’s working?
  • What are you doing that is hindering you from learning in this class that you are going to quit doing?
  • What do you think will help you improve your learning in this class that you are going to start doing?

Be sure to respond to 2 classmates. Try to keep the conversation going. Responses should be a minimum of 100 words and include direct questions.

Hello class,

It is hard to believe we are already at the half way point of this class. I feel that online math learning is probably more difficult than learning in a classroom but also offers incentives that a brick and mortar classroom does not. For one you do not have a teacher up front presenting the material who can answer and re-explain questions right there on the spot. The benefits on an online classroom is that I can attend class whenever I am available and I can break it up, pause, start, and end at my choosing. This makes note taking and reading easier at least for me. One thing that I really enjoy about this class is that I have to really go back and remember some algebra and calculus to do the manual handwritten problems, but also I have the ability to just type in excel a formula to basically solve everything for me to easily double check my work. I try and complete all the reading and practice work on Monday. This gives me Tuesday and Wednesday to continue to review the homework and take notes so that Thursday I can complete the homework usually with ease. I need to stop waiting until Wednesday or Thursday to start writing the forum. I am going to start going back and reading previous chapters and reviewing my old notes starting this week before our next quiz. Overall my experience from this class is similar to that I had in College Algebra and Calculus which was quite pleasant and easy to learn.

Hello class,

I’m still not to sure about learning math online. I like the fact that I can go at my own pace throughout the week. I do think that it may be a little more difficult learning it online than it would be in a regular classroom. I have never been very good at math. I have also been out of high school for over 27 years. It has been a real challenge for me to remember some of the basic principles that I was taught back then. I have always struggled with fractions and the equations that use then cause me a headache.

This is the first time that I have heard the phrase “keep-quit-start” resolution. I think that it is a very good idea. I think for the keep part, I will keep being persistent and studying the lessons until I grasp the concepts. For the quit part, I will stop procrastinating. I tend to put off the things that I struggle with. I think most of us tend to try to avoid what we are dreading. For the start aspect, I have a couple things that I should start doing. The main one is to spend more time at the beginning of the week on the lessons. The second thing that I need to do is ask for help when I am struggling with some of the concept. I realize that there are many options for assistance and I need to start asking for it, when I need it.

This class has been challenging for me and I am looking forward to getting through these last weeks. Hopefully, it will all begin to click for me and become easier.

Let me know if you will have any questions?
