Article Critical Summary -The Late Paleozoic Ice Age: An Evolving Paradigm

Article Critical Summary -The Late Paleozoic Ice Age: An Evolving Paradigm. Article Critical Summary -The Late Paleozoic Ice Age: An Evolving Paradigm.

INSTRUCTIONS

Write a 300-600 word critical summary of the article provided as attachment (The Late Paleozoic Ice Age: An Evolving Paradigm). The idea is to identify and analyze the hypothesis, methods, results and conclusions of the article. This is for a 200 level geology course and is the last of a handful of article summaries for the semester.

It may surprise you that some scientific studies are not of the highest quality, and even high-quality science has certain limitations on applicability or relevance. To refine your literacy of the Geosciences, and your training as high-performance scientists, you will practice critically reviewing one article from our seminar sessions, and writing a Critical Summary based on that review.

This summary is a brief, but detailed, assessment of the published article. For each summary, there needs to be: 1) citations given, 2) a list of references, 3) a title of the summary, 4) your name; and 5) the summary itself. The summaries should be between 300–600 words, not including references.

The following order can help you organize your summary:

In assessing the article you will need to identify and summarize the problem/hypothesis in the article, in your own words. Do not copy and paste text from the article that outlines the problem/hypothesis. Instead try to rephrase the problem/hypothesis in your own words in order to self-test your understanding of what is being said.

Then address the key point(s) or conclusion of the study. What new information has been gained from this work? Describing these first two points: 1) the problem/hypothesis, and 2) the conclusions, help frame the scope and impact of the study in a concise way.

Describe the method(s) and approach the authors used to address the problem/hypothesis. This should be a brief assessment of the types of samples that were used (if applicable), and a very brief mention of what was measured (if applicable, note: papers based on numeric models or simulations often will not include original measurements or sample collection).

Summarize the results and describe the reliability of the data. Based on the results section describe the quality and completeness of the data with respect to the problem/hypothesis that was to be evaluated. For example, if I set out to document atmospheric CO2 concentrations during the entire Archean (4.0 Ga to 2.5 Ga), but I only present 5 data points for that time interval, then it could easily be argued that my data is not a reliable evaluation of the history of atmospheric CO2 during the Archean (but perhaps it is better than nothing, if this was the first attempt to develop such records).

Now, nearing the end of the summary, you will want to come back full circle and draw connections between the data that was collected and how it led the authors to their conclusions. Is there a strong connection of the data to the conclusions? Do the authors rely on speculation to reach their conclusions, or on informed assumptions (if so, does it seem excessive)? Imagine removing the data from this part of the article, would that impact what the authors are saying here (i.e., are their conclusions based more strongly on assumptions and speculation rather than their own observations?)?

Congratulations on drafting a Critical Summary! Now spend some time proofreading your summary. It’s often very helpful to take a break from writing before you proofread your work.

Evolution

Evolution. Evolution. 1) Read the paper “Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian Spring” by Stephen J. Gould
(Natural History, Sept, 1997) and prepare a critique of this paper including a
summary of each of the main ideas discussed.
2a) The paper must be 2 to 3 pages in length.
b) It must be typed, on white paper.
c) It must be in a 12 point font, double spaced.
d) Illustrations do not count toward the page count minimum of 2.
e) This is a scientific paper to determine how well you understand the theories
behind evolution, not on what you believe happened. Papers expressing a
religious viewpoint, while the views may be valid, are not the subject of this
essay. Papers expressing those viewpoints will not be graded. You do not have to
believe that the views expressed by the author of the essay are correct; just prove
to me that you understand them.

Current Event Assignment on Landslides

Current Event Assignment on Landslides.

INSTRUCTIONS

Pick out articles that relate directly to landslides covered within this Earth Science class (published within the last three years).

Once you find a primary source article that you are interested in, search for at least one additional RELATED source article to add further support & details to your primary source.

Your Current Event Essay must include:

  1. Titles of Primary Source Articles
    1. 2 source articles are required (1 primary source article & 1 related source article); however, most students utilize more sources plus their textbook
  2. Primary Source Article Author and Discussion of Author Qualifications
    1. In other words, describe the author’s background in detail.
    1. Note – if the chosen article is a summary of a scientific journal article, include qualifications of both the article author and the research scientist
  3. Summary of Primary Source Articles and Related Source Article(s) – IN YOUR OWN WORDS [minimum length = 2 detailed paragraphs]
  4. Critique of Primary Source Articles and Related Source Article(s) – IN YOUR OWN WORDS  [this section should be the bulk of your essay, minimum length = 4 detailed paragraphs]
  5. Specifically, address the following questions:
    1. How does the topic of the article affect the Earth as a whole?
    1. How does this article relate to my life?
  6. References (APA format preferred)

Please use the above 6 numbers/headings to organize your essay.

What is a Critique? A book report only summarizes the article.  A critical essay is you explaining what you think of their data.  For a 1000-word essay, the summary should only be about two paragraphs long.  The rest of the report should be your thoughts about the topic.  Analyze the pros and cons of the article.  Is the author presenting good science or just opinion?  Is the author a recognized expert?  How could the article be improved?

What is Good Science? The instructions above ask you to evaluate whether the article is ‘good science’.  DO NOT just tell me it is ‘good science’.  Explain why.  Start by asking yourself these questions: Did they try and use the scientific method (Ch. 1)? Did they support the conclusions with facts?  Did they provide the facts or a reference to them?  If the answer is no to any of those basic questions, then it’s probably not good quality science, and you probably need to find at least 1 more supplemental article to add additional support to your essay.

Essays will be submitted online and checked for plagiarism via TurnItIn.  Any essay found to have significant plagiarism detected (above 25%) will receive a 0 for this assignment.

Grading Rubric for Current Event Assignment – Essay:

Discussion of Author Qualifications = 5 pts

Summary = 15 pts

Critique = 20 pts

Discussion of 2 required supplemental questions = 10 pts

Reference Page = 6 pts

Length / Word Count = 4 pts

Appropriate Grammar & Organization = 5 pts

1. In 1984, David Stockman, director of the Office of Management and Budget for President Reagan, said that it would cost $1000 per fish to control acid precipitation in the Adirondack lakes and that it would be cheaper to buy fish for anglers than to put scrubbers on power plants in Ohio. Explain what scrubbers do and review their pros and cons. Give your opinion on whether or not they should be required and support your opinion based on the pros and cons you noted.

2. Read this article: http://sinosphere.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/11/01/hong-kong-finds-switch-to-cleaner-fuels-has-flaws/?ref=greenhousegasemissions&_r=0 Write a report on catalytic converters in automobiles – what they do, how they do it and why some people consider them to be good for the environment and others consider them to be bad for the environment. State your opinion on whether or not they will benefit society and support your opinion based on the pros and cons you noted. (One thing to look at: follow the chain of energy production methane is used to make 99% of H2 in US. Even if we use electricity in future, most of it is made in coal-fired powerplants
