This is for a 200 level geology course and is the last of a handful of article summaries for the semester.

It may surprise you that some scientific studies are not of the highest quality, and even high-quality science has certain limitations on applicability or relevance. To refine your literacy of the Geosciences, and your training as high-performance scientists, you will practice critically reviewing one article from our seminar sessions, and writing a Critical Summary based on that review.

This summary is a brief, but detailed, assessment of the published article. For each summary, there needs to be: 1) citations given, 2) a list of references, 3) a title of the summary, 4) your name; and 5) the summary itself. The summaries should be between 300–600 words, not including references.

The following order can help you organize your summary:

In assessing the article you will need to identify and summarize the problem/hypothesis in the article, in your own words. Do not copy and paste text from the article that outlines the problem/hypothesis. Instead try to rephrase the problem/hypothesis in your own words in order to self-test your understanding of what is being said.

Then address the key point(s) or conclusion of the study. What new information has been gained from this work? Describing these first two points: 1) the problem/hypothesis, and 2) the conclusions, help frame the scope and impact of the study in a concise way.

Describe the method(s) and approach the authors used to address the problem/hypothesis. This should be a brief assessment of the types of samples that were used (if applicable), and a very brief mention of what was measured (if applicable, note: papers based on numeric models or simulations often will not include original measurements or sample collection).

Summarize the results and describe the reliability of the data. Based on the results section describe the quality and completeness of the data with respect to the problem/hypothesis that was to be evaluated. For example, if I set out to document atmospheric CO2 concentrations during the entire Archean (4.0 Ga to 2.5 Ga), but I only present 5 data points for that time interval, then it could easily be argued that my data is not a reliable evaluation of the history of atmospheric CO2 during the Archean (but perhaps it is better than nothing, if this was the first attempt to develop such records).

Now, nearing the end of the summary, you will want to come back full circle and draw connections between the data that was collected and how it led the authors to their conclusions. Is there a strong connection of the data to the conclusions? Do the authors rely on speculation to reach their conclusions, or on informed assumptions (if so, does it seem excessive)? Imagine removing the data from this part of the article, would that impact what the authors are saying here (i.e., are their conclusions based more strongly on assumptions and speculation rather than their own observations?)?

What is Good Science? The instructions above ask you to evaluate whether the article is ‘good science’.  DO NOT just tell me it is ‘good science’.  Explain why.  Start by asking yourself these questions: Did they try and use the scientific method (Ch. 1)? Did they support the conclusions with facts?  Did they provide the facts or a reference to them?  If the answer is no to any of those basic questions, then it’s probably not good quality science, and you probably need to find at least 1 more supplemental article to add additional support to your essay.

GSC 103 Research Paper

For the GSC 103 Written Assignment you will be required to write a 1500 word research paper on any of the topics listed on the syllabus for this course (A list of topics can be found below). Only four students will be allowed to report on any given topic (first come-first serve basis).  This is a great opportunity for you to practice researching and writing on a subject within the Earth Sciences, and to develop an understanding that extends beyond the material discussed in the lectures.  You may even choose to pick one aspect of these major topics.  For example, perhaps you are interested a particular mineral, metal, or other natural resource and you want to research its geology and economics.  That is fine, as long as you check with me first.  Furthermore, I understand that we are not all geoscientists and I want the relatively relaxed guidelines involved in this paper to allow you to find and research a topic that truly interests you. Finally, I hope you all to have fun with this project.  Pick a topic that really catches your eye and learn about it in detail.  I find that when time is spent to truly learn about something, we often carry that knowledge with us into the future.

As you research your topic, I would like you to consider the following questions:

  1. What is the history that has led to our current understanding of the topic you are researching?
  2. Who are the main players involved in this research?

                -In other words, who were the scientists involved in the discovery / major advancements in the history and evolution of the subject (if your topic has any)?

  • What are the major processes (physical and / or chemical) involved in your topic?
  • How does your topic affect our world, today? 

                -If you are researching a subject involved with deep time, how does it influence our thinking and understanding of our place on this planet, today?

                -If you choose energy and mineral resources, what are their environmental and economic impacts?

You do not necessarily have to incorporate all of these questions into your writing, but I want them to be a guide for you to use as you research your topic.   

When I grade these papers I will be looking for the following:

  1. Organization—I want to see that you can present your ideas in a clear and organized way.
  2. Detail—research (and really any) papers require a close eye to detail.  I understand that we are not all wordsmiths, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have to properly take the time to read and check our work.  Sloppy papers reflect the intention of the writer, so just take some extra time to read and appreciate your product.
  3. Consistency—you must use citations to correctly reference your work.  The particular format you choose is not important, so long as it is consistent. If you have any questions regarding proper citation use, please ask.
  4. Time—although these papers are not long, I want to see that you took this project seriously and spent the time to adequately research your writing.  This goes beyond organization, detail, and consistency.  I want to see that time was taken to thoroughly and properly execute the research of your particular topic.
