INSTRUCTIONS
International Economic Development—Case Studies
There will be two case studies throughout the semester. You are required to collect data and write reports on a developing country* related to the topics that will be covered in class. You are to choose one developing country for both case studies. For the second case study, you can choose your own topic related to development studies. The topic choices are: population, education, health, environment or immigration. The goal of the case studies is to help us understand the development situation of this country better. Each case study will be 10% of your final grade.
Case study 2 peer reviews

*Two peer reviews are assigned automatically at the case study submission due date. Review your classmates’ reports and give feedback, make comments on what you have learned from the study and suggest some improvement that can be made to make it a better report.
Required Report Length
Each case study should have at least three pages. (Suggested length: 3-5 pages). Submit in Microsoft word document through Canvas. Single spaced with font 12.
Case study 1:
Choose a developing country, report its basic economic data and analyze its situation on Poverty and Inequality.
Requirements:
- Include one-page country summary

- Find some of the important and basic development indicators. It includes: HDI, life expectancy at birth, expected years of schooling, mean years of schooling, GNI per capita (PPP, $), Economic Growth Rate and so on if they are not already included in the onepage country summary.
- Report data on Poverty and inequality.
Measures on Poverty:
Population living below poverty line, PPP $1.9 a day
Poverty headcount index at PPP $1.9 a day
Poverty Gap at PPP $1.9 a day Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Measures of inequality:
Gini coefficient
Size distribution: Income share held by top 20% and income share held by the poorest 20%

- Explain your findings in the data carefully and discuss some poverty or inequality reduction policies that this country may have used or you think that it should have used.
You need to find related news, articles and studies to work on this portion.
- Include a brief reference.

Case study 2:
Use the same developing country as case study #1, report its data on the topic you choose and discuss its development.
Requirement:
- Make sure you are studying the same country as your case study #1.
- Find some of the important and basic indicators* regarding your topic.
- Carefully explain your findings in the data.
- Regarding the topic you chose, discuss some of the policies that this country has been using or has used in the past. What are the results? Do you agree with these policies? Are there any consequences? What can other countries learn from these policies?
- Include a brief reference.
*Please refer to class material to decide on which indicators/data to include. You can find most of data from the World Bank data base. Here are some examples on what to include:
Population: Size of the population, Crude birth rate/death rate, Population growth rate, Total fertility rate, Population pyramid: Age structure and dependency burdens.
Health: Top ten reasons of death, Physicians per 1,000 people, Health expenditure, Health expenditure per capita, Recent/Current situation on Covid-19 Pandemic.
Education: Literacy rate, different level school enrollment rates, government expenditure per student, primary school completion rate, pupil-teacher ratio, expected years of schooling, mean years of schooling.
